Autumn 1
Welcome to Nursery! We are so happy you have joined our class and we have so many exciting things for us to learn and do. Your teacher is Mrs Copley and your teaching assistants are Miss Speight and Mrs Green. This term we get chance to find out all about you and your families, as our topic is ‘Marvellous Me.’
Autumn Term 1:
Communication and Language – Children will begin to develop their listening skills during carpet sessions and small group activities. They will be encouraged to interact with their peers by initiating conversations and continuing in back-and-forth exchanges. Children will respond to their own name and name members of their immediate family. We will further focus on being able to communicate how they are feeling using the words, happy, sad and angry.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development – Children will become more confident to separate from their carer with support. Children will meet and make lots of new friends whilst exploring their new learning environment. This half term, the children will learn our school rules and the rules and routines in their new classroom. Children will begin to develop their independence through toileting, hand washing, toothbrushing and accessing free flow snack.
Physical development – In P.E children are learning Fundamental Movements. They will spend time learning basic principles of a PE lesson such as finding a space, freezing on command, using and sharing equipment and working individually, with a partner and group. They will take part in activities which will develop fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, skipping. Children will be encouraged to use mark making tools and one-handed equipment to develop their fine motor skills. They will be encouraged to hold pencils using a tripod grasp and will practise forming letters and numerals correctly.
Literacy – • We will be sharing stories linked to our language programme. Through these texts we will learn about the feelings of characters and how this may apply to our own lives. We will also focus on a special word each day linked to our key text. Continuous provision in the classroom will also be planned around our key text so that children can explore and deepen their understanding independently and with an adult.
In phonics we will be following our Floppy Phonics programme and will primarily focus on environmental sounds and rhythm and rhyme. Children will begin to recognise, say and write initial letter sounds (satpin) and develop a knowledge of blending CVC words through our daily Floppy’s Phonics sessions. Children will practise making marks with their finger, paintbrush and pencil and begin to secure a dominant hand and pencil grasp.
Mathematics – This term, the children will develop a basic knowledge of number through counting to 5 and showing the corresponding fingers. Children will develop their understanding of numbers through number rhymes. We will also be making comparisons between objects relating to size, length, weight and capacity. Children will be encouraged to compare amounts using the vocabulary lots more and the same. Through adult initiated sessions and provision, children will be supported to develop their core mathematical knowledge.
Understanding the World – We will be exploring the natural world around us and the natural changes that occur. Children will also be encouraged to talk about what they see, using a wide vocabulary. Children will make connections to themselves and the world around them and know that they used to be a baby and now they are growing bigger. Children will know what is a family and who is in their family. They will be able to name these people.
Expressive Arts and Design – This term children will explore different materials freely, to develop their ideas about how to use them and what to make. Children will develop their own ideas and then decide which materials to use to express them. In the creative area, children are encouraged to cut, (holding scissors correctly) and create collages and junk modelling by attaching a variety of materials. Children are encouraged to use one-handed tools such as rolling pins, cutters, hole punches and staplers to develop their fine motor skills. Children will sing lots of songs are encouraged to remember and sing entire songs along with playing various percussion instruments.
