Welcome to Year 5! This is your first year in Upper Key Stage 2 and will be filled with new challenges and learning experiences. Miss Dodd is your class teach teacher and the class TA’s are Miss Phillips, Mr Clayton and Mrs Anstee-Cooke. This term we have many exciting topics to learn about In History, we will be exploring crime and punishment overtime. This will cover the history of punishments including: Roman, Viking, Tudor, Victorian and modern period. Our science topic this term is going to be forces. This unit with teach your children about different forces such as friction, gravity, air resistance and water resistance. Children will also learn about the use of mechanisms such as levers, gears and pulleys. In Literacy we will be continuing to develop our skills by writing a newspaper report, biased argument and narrative with flashback. In art, we will be exploring different African patterns and using this as inspiration to design our very own stamps. These stamps will be used to print our own design to make our very own African cloth. In Maths we will continue to develop our multiplication and division skills and we will introduce fractions. Our guided Reading text is Cogheart which is a thrilling, Steampunk-style story set in Victorian London which will influence our writing unit for the first 2 weeks back after Christmas.

We have P.E. every Monday during the morning session. Please ensure that your child comes to school prepared with their full P.E. kit and appropriate outdoor footwear. We have a weekly library session during Friday afternoon, in which children will be able to read fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts for pleasure. They will also have the opportunity to change their book during this time.
