Welcome to Year 5! This is your first year in Upper Key Stage 2 and will be filled with new challenges and learning experiences. Miss Hartley is your class teacher and the class TA’s are Miss Henshaw and Mr Brayshaw. This term we have many exciting topics to learn about. In History, we will be exploring Ancient Egypt. This will cover mummification, Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb and the importance of the River Nile. Our Science topic this term is going to be forces. This unit with teach your children about different forces such as friction, gravity, air resistance and water resistance. Children will also learn about the use of mechanisms such as levers, gears and pulleys. In Art, we will be exploring different shades and tones to create detailed portraits. In Maths, we have introduced the Singapore maths method and will cover place value, addition and subtraction. Our Guided Reading text is the well-known classic, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which will also influence our literacy work. In addition, we will be exploring poetry written by Francis Rodman. In Literacy we will be continuing to develop our skills by writing a newspaper report, biased argument and a narrative.

Y5 Dragon's Edge Information

We have P.E. every Friday during the morning session. Please ensure that your child comes to school prepared with their full P.E. kit and appropriate outdoor footwear. We have a weekly library session during Tuesday afternoon, in which children will be able to read fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts for pleasure. They will also have the opportunity to change their book during this time. Homework is due in on Wednesdays. Your child will have a homework grid for them to select an activity which sparks their interest. One of these must be completed each week. We have a spelling quiz every Monday.
