Enchanted Wood
Welcome to Year 2! Your class teacher this year is Mrs Whelpdale, along with our wonderful class teaching assistant Mrs Robertson. Our class name for this school year is ‘Enchanted Wood ’. This story setting is inspired by the one of our year 2 recommended read books called ‘Enchanted Wood’ by Enid Blyton. Both Mrs Robertson and I believe that books are the key to unlocking our imaginations and therefore we will explore a wide range of books over the next school term.

We will enjoy various texts to provide us with a purpose for writing in Literacy. This will include ‘Jim and the Beanstalk’, ‘Wolves, ‘The Journey Home’ and non-fiction information based on ‘Guy Fawkes which coincides perfectly with our history topic all about The Gunpowder Plot. In guided reading lessons, we will be focussing on reading extracts and then retrieving information from what we have read. We will be using the skill of skimming and scanning to help us to do this as well as a continued focus on using our phonic knowledge to build upon our fluency skills.

In Maths, we will cover many topics over the term which include, comparing numbers, place value, number patterns, as well as adding and subtracting. We will continue to master addition and subtraction which involve renaming and the multiplication and division facts for the 3 times table. We will revisit our knowledge of number bonds to 10 and extend this onto number bonds to 20. We will cover the 1 and 2 times tables and their corresponding division facts.

We will cover a range of topic areas in our wider curriculum learning including, Science, PSHE, DT, ICT, RE, Geography, History and Art. We will create our own moving vehicles in DT and develop our sketching skills based around self portraits in Art. We will be learning about Esafety in ICT, exploring materials in Science and discussing our families and friends in PSHE to find out what makes a good friend.
Y2 Enchanted Wood Information

We are fortunate enough to have Mr Sidebottom to teach our PE lessons which will now take place each Wednesday and Mrs Scully will visit our class every other Monday to teach Art.

Our library day is every Monday so please ensure you have your book in school each week. We are very passionate and enthusiastic about reading in year 2 so please remember to read as often as you can and bring your reading books back to school on a regular basis to be changed. Prizes are still up for grabs for children who are working their way through the reading miles as well as our in-class celebrations for readers who go above and beyond each week! Please remember to keep practising your spellings. Spelling tests will take place every Friday followed by a resit on the following Monday for children scoring 7 or less. This way our children have a second attempt to practise their spellings over the weekend to aim for a higher score. Our spellings each week will initially be based around the sounds we are covering in phonics that week.

We are so enthusiastic for learning in class and we can’t wait to share all our amazing work with you. Let’s work together both at home and in school to ensure that we have an amazing and successful year!
