Welcome to Year 1 – “Swinging from the Treetops”!

We’re excited to welcome you and your child to Year 1! This year, your child’s class teacher is Miss Hobson and we are lucky to have Miss Horton supporting us throughout the year. Our class theme for the year is "Swinging from the Treetops", inspired by the children’s book ‘Where the Wild Things are.”

In Year 1, we believe that books unlock the imagination therefore throughout the year, we will explore a variety of year 1 recommended reads to support our learning and creativity across the curriculum.

Your child will take part in daily phonics lessons, building on the sounds they already know and learning alternative spellings used in writing. This will support us for our National Phonics Screening Test in June 2026.

In literacy, we’ll use our class books to support dictated sentence writing, helping children focus on capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and applying their phonics knowledge.

In maths, we will be recognising numbers to 20, adding and subtracting to 10 and within 20, learning number bonds to 6, and exploring the position of numbers on a number line.

Our wider curriculum includes science, PSHE, design and technology, computing, religious education, geography, history and art, giving children a broad and exciting learning experience.

• Library Day: Every Thursday

• PE Day: Every Monday with Mr Sidebottom. Please ensure your child has their PE kit and appropriate outdoor footwear (weather permitting) plus any earrings have been removed.

• Spelling Tests: Held every Friday. New spelling words are sent home on Monday for practice. If your child scores 7 or less, they will be given the weekend to have another practise before a retest the following Monday.

We’re looking forward to a fun-filled year of learning, growth, and imagination!
